Overview
Aron’s Market Assessment
7 out of 10 rating (2026-Feb-12)
- The market is currently contracting due to swipe fatigue and failure of dating apps to meet Gen Z other pain points such as lack of authenticity, being ghosted and trust and safety issues.
- Hinge’s continued success shows that the market is not completely broken and apps that come up with solutions to user problems can thrive.
- The traction that we are seeing among the recently launched AI Matchmakers shows that demand for authentic apps and apps with less swiping is strong.
- Most people still believe in in-person meetups, reducing the total addressable market for dating apps.
- It may take time to change the cultural aspect around AI i.e. most people still don’t see the relationship as authentic when AI is involved.
- Personalized dating apps such as Three Day Rule continue to see strong demand and charge very high prizes, which is an opportunity for Bumble if it can build a superior product (personalized AI matchmaker).
Moritz Martin Assessment
7 out of 10.
- I believe that many people have the traditional view that meeting someone in person is the way to go, which i completely understand but i think with ever better matchmaking the technology can become so powerful that it will be the clearly superior way to find people in the future that are highly compatible and which you would have never met without the technology. That’s the easiest way to find exactly the right and matching singles. ← Most people don’t understand this potential and think online dating is dead are wrong at this point. See also: ‣
- I think with AI there is now a unique ability to connect people who fit together better than ever before. This should be extremely valuable to people given the very positive impact which it can have to find the right partner. Therefore i think there is tremendous potential for higher prices and an way larger marketsize (TAM) in the long-run.
- The market is currently contracting due to swiping fatigue and potentially a missing PMF with younger users
- It’s a very new market. Before Tinder, Bumble & Hinge appeared online dating was very niche. They made it mainstream starting around 12 years ago
- I believe that online dating will always exists as the need for people to find partners is universal and timeless and they will use always use all available methods to do so.
- Currently user numbers are shrinking and users get older. Will the trend reverse for Gen Z or not? (Did Gen Z try?)
